put my car through its MOT the other day and it failed on the exhaust being 'excessively loud!' this is first i've ever heard of noise levels being tested in MOTs and wondered if its legit. can anyone enlighten my dilemma.

From: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10016070

"Components tested during your MOT test:

Exhaust system - complete, secure, without serious leaks and silences effectively"

From: http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosacorp/repository/08%201246.pdf

"With the engine running assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer
in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle,
and the Reason for Rejection (RfR) is; a silencer in such condition, or of such
a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above
the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition."

"As stated in the Method of Inspection wording, the test is subjective, and therefore relies
on the tester s judgement. MOT testing stations are not required (or permitted) to
use noise meters assess the levels of exhaust noise."

mine failed with the pro spec 3 on with out bung in had to get it retested with the bung in and passed .failed on some bullshit about it being excessive noise compared to a car of the same type and build (eg. a standard car with standard exhaust system)

had the car put through again today with the Spoon N1 bung (temporarily 1 of the last ones in the country!) £40 odd for a bit of metal tube!!!

made a little more quiet and the bloke did pass it, but gave me an advisory.

i suppose he's only doing his job so i'll refrain from verbally assaulting him Smiley

I had a Spoon N1, the bung was the biggest waste of money, ever in my opinion until now......No longer have it on. It is rotten and had to be removed. £250 down the scrap yard, like the rest of the zaust system from Topgear. Wankers. Longlife is proving far superior and quality and the issues with my CEL light has made me see excellent customer service.

Too loud? Wait till you hear it at 6700pm...Now pipe down lol  Shocked

so ur spoon n1 rotted? that cant be right, they're made from stainless steel. prob better steel than what longlife are using. are u sure it was a real N1 and not a china copy?

altho i do agree that the bung is the biggest waste of money. made the tinyest difference in noise.

It was the real deal. The whole system failed. When you shook it, you could hear the internals rattling. Awful sound...Might be the car was running to rich and flamed it out, I do not know. Bought it 2nd hand. A claimed 20000 miles done on it. What a waste of money in all honesty.....

I have the balance now on the exhaust sound. 1 - 3.5 K is a nice sound...Above and all the way up is a sophisticated screaming banshee on crack lol  Grin

I passed my MOT! Just out of curiosity how much do you guys pay for MOT? I just got charged £50 and I think that is way too high.
