well.. my car started making some funny noises recently and yesteray they got quite bad . so i have took a trip to my 2 local garages and both said it could be something to do with the gearbox. they said it was something defo internal and i am not happy  Angry  any idea's what i could about it or anything... ? they said it would be prob be as cheap to get it recon'd rather than buying a used 1. (these are the 2 options i've got as a new gearbox would cost an arm and a leg from honda !!)
just wondering what other people would do...

thanks in advanced lads.

gearboxes are a (the only?) weak point on the ep's...  Roll Eyes
I would consider a new one, because a second hand one can get problems in a few k miles after you bought it. So you got a chance you have this problem 2 times...

I got my second gearbox for £150 quid and it has been fine.

Well worth trying to get a low mileage one from the breakers.

could end up in the same boat 5000 miles later.. but then again, it could life you a car life-time..

My Wife has taken Hers to Honda today, with the same problem.
the noise is audible in 1st and 2nd gear. .  and She`s been told it`s the bearings.
They have quoted around £700 to do the work, so I assume most of that is for labour.
As We haven`t got much money at the moment, We are looking for options.
Even If I was lucky enough to find a box from a breaker for around £150, We`ll still have to pay someone to do the work.  :-\

yerp, defo sounds like the bearings. thats what mine was like and cost £850. luckily for me, i took an extended warantee out  Grin and it was covered. all i had to pay was £19 for the gearbox oil and £25 excess on my warantee  Smiley

im not mechanic by all means but i would say around 3/4 hours labour to swop a gearbox.. i await to be corrected ..

how many miles have you done on the car with the sound coming from the gearbox? admittingly, i must of done another 5000 miles before it went in to get repaired..

**edit**
my warantee invoice states :
Labour to Remove and Refit Gearbox 3.8 Hours - £160.
Gearbox Strip Down, Bearings Replaced and Full Overhaul - £680.

so for honda to do it sounds pretty good 2bh!

it`s My Wife's car. .  I don`t think She's done much more than 1,000 miles since the noise became noticable.
however I told Her She should really get it done as soon as possible, and We are thinking of taking it to Honda, just for the peace of mind.
what concerns Me, is reading about this problem occurring around the 50,000 mile mark, is it going to happen again around the 100,000 mile mark? even though that might take Her another 15-20 years to reach, lol.
She loves the car, so wants to keep it for a while I think.

i wouldn't say it will completely die on you anytime soon but just use it whenver you've got too and it will see you another few months depending on the mileage and how she drives the car  Smiley
to what you said about the 100,000 mile mark, i don't think this is the case. i read somewhere that apparently, the bearings that was used where made in germany and they wasn't good enough for the higher-revving honda engine. therefore, they do not work aswell together than they would if they used japaniese bearings. but that is only something i read so don't quote me on that 1. but like you said, if you don't have plans keeping the car til it reaches 100k miles, then why worry  Cheesy?!

*edit*
when they replace the bearings at the garage, they would use more durable and better bearings than honda used to keep the cost down when building the car!!

well,We were all set to take the car into Honda, when I found a gearbox specialist near Kidderminster.
I rang them and was impressed with Their telephone manner and knowledge of this problem.

We dropped the car off yesterday evening, and are expecting the car back  tomorrow or Thursday.
I was recommended to them by a work colleague (apparently they do all our work vehicles).

the gearbox was just being removed when I rang them this evening, so if all is well, it should be back in the car tomorrow.
I will update when My Wife has got the car back, but if anyone else is interested, here's a rough guide to their prices:

remove/refit gearbox £95
gear oil £12. 80
bearings around £100

or worst case scenario. . .  complete recon gearbox supplied and fitted for £525

well. .  car is back home now.  it's runnin great again  Grin
everything seems ok. .  total price was less than £380, so Wifey is well chuffed with that.
if anyone else has this problem, it's well worth shopping around for a price.

it was done by a small company near Kidderminster, they seem to do all types of gearbox/transmission work, including clutch fitting.
I phoned them just out of curiosity, but was instantly impressed by their telephone manner and willingness to help. .  not to mention the prices :)
the civic was done in three days too, so they don't hang about.
My wife's just gone out in the car (shopping) so I guess She's glad to have it back, especially after having to use My land rover for three days, lol.
If You're wondering why I'm driving a land rover, well I used to have a Type R, but a CSA claim against Me ended that.
I'm thinking of going back to an EG Civic though, when funds allow. .  as I love Hondas.
I guess I'll have to make do with My CBR 600 for now  Grin
