Hi all, I tried changing my rear pads yesterday on my 05 EP2 the problem I found is that I couldnt push the piston back enough to fit the new pads in as a result I failed in my mission and had to put the old ones back in for now  Huh, is there a trick to this as my car is in for a service Tuesday @ Honda and I wanted to get it sorted before then because if I get Honda to do it I will probably be looking at over £100.

i change mine not so long ago.... my honest advice....... push harder, not too hard tho or you will have brake fluid spilling down the resovoir and taking paint off things , when i ws doin mine i used a clamp, kinda like this.....

again don't push too hard or too fast incase you break the piston or fluid leaks!!

Cheers but to be fair I pushed as hard as I could, I put a bar inbetween and tried to prize it open more but it got to a certain point and wouldnt go anymore, I even loosened the screw at the top of the calliper to let some break fluid out whilst I pushed but still wouldnt go back enough  Huh

I think you need to rotate the piston as you wind it in.
I had to change my work mates brake pads on his Honda Accord. The front pistons push straight in, but you actually have to wind the rears in (clockwise) whilst pushing.

Give it a go, it may be the same on our Civics....  Wink

That sounds unusual do you need a special tool as I dont suppose you would be able to do it with your hands ?

Also is there a Civic parts list anywhere so I can try and find the part number to the Bolt & Nut I butchered whilst trying to bolt the front caliper back onto the carrier

use a pair of thin nosed pliers and put the legs of the pliers in the slot and rotate the rear piston back in

I would second this advice. Not touched my rears yet but I've done a few rear brakes before and most that have the handbrake that work off the rears you have to wind in.

hi mate i work for honda and have an ep2 the rear piston are screw backs as said you screw them clockwise you do get a tool for them costs bout 18pound does the job easily but a g clamp on the piston and on the opposite end of the caliper and a screwdriver turning it round does the trick jus remeber to keep the clamp tight to keep the pressure on the  piston

Our rear brakes can be real pain.

Make sure the front wheels are chocked and the car cant roll away.

Do all of the work on the rear brakes with the handbrake released.

Screw them back and fit them making sure you dont touch the handbrake the whole time.

Take the car for a test drive and make sure the pad adjuster has a chance to err.. adjust.

Get back to garage or driveway etc and then adjust handbrake.

If you put engage handbrake too soon the there is a distinct chance that one side of rear brakes will not be engaging.

The EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) our cars hides the fact there is a problem but braking power and handbrake power could be down.

I remember me dad having a slight problem when he changed mine for me to EBC Ultimax rears..when he was done we noticed that the o/s/r pad was sticking/seized to the disc Sad so it was nearly on fire like n smoke pouring from it Sad thought he had killed it!

but he knew what to do by spraying some WD-40 into the caliper and managed to sort the problem by forcing it back in/out..luckily its been fine since February Smiley

hope u get this sorted man..
